CDHS Hosts Abbreviated Day Orientation for Freshmen and New Students
By D’Lee Pollock, CDHS LIbrarian
On Friday, August 2nd, 2024 from 8:00 am until 10:00 am, Chuckey-Doak High School hosted an abbreviated day orientation for freshmen and new students. The event was held in order to help all students new to the CDHS campus gain valuable insights of their schedules, teachers, and expectations. Students began arriving around 7:30 am. We asked several of our students three questions.
How does it feel to be a freshmen?
What are you looking forward to in high school?
How do you feel about the first day of school coming up?
Students received a paper copy of their schedules before going to the auditorium to hear about school-wide expectations and services offered at CDHS. Mr. Broyles, our principal, spoke about behavior expectations and gave encouraging words to our students about their freshmen year. Our assistant principal Dr. Hoeke discussed cell phone policy, and then our associate principal Dr. Donahue talked about attendance. Ms. McAmis , our 9-10 counselor, briefly discussed guidance office services, and then Ms. Pollock , our librarian, introduced students to the Knight’s Shoppe (coffee shop and school store) and the Knight’s Nook (library). Students were also told about medical services by Mr. Broyles.

Students who have turned in their form, but have not received their device will receive it next week. Students who have not turned in their computer contract should do so on the first day of school.

Students then practiced following their schedule, starting with first period. Many students received their computer in first period before finding out more about that class. Students who have turned in their form, but have not received their device will receive it next week. Students who have not turned in their computer contract should do so on the first day of school. After first period, students then rotated through their other three classes while getting help to learn the building. Many students said that they enjoyed meeting their new teachers most of all.

At the end of the day, students heard from Mr. Broyles again in the Commons. He talked to students about getting home each day and how we leave school.

Students then exited the building for car pickup or bus rides. We asked students three more questions:
How did your day go?
What did you do today?
What are you looking forward to in high school?
We look forward to seeing our freshman and new students along with the entire student body on the First Day of School, August 6, 2024. Buses will be running. Please read our Back-to-School article for more information.
Special thanks to Ms. Brandy McAmis for our feature graphic for this post.
