CDHS Kicks off the 2024-2025 School Year with First Day of School
by D’Lee Pollock, CDHS Librarian
Students grades 9-12 headed back to class on Tuesday at Chuckey-Doak High School. Students began arriving on campus at 7:15 am. Schedules were printed and available for students to pick up in the Commons, and then students chose whether to go to breakfast or the gym. At 7:50 am, students began walking to class, and first period began at 8:00 am.
“Welcome back to school, parents, guardians, and students. I am thrilled to welcome everyone to the 24-25 school year. This year presents us with an opportunity to start afresh and move forward in a positive direction. I am confident that with our collective work, we will make this academic year an exceptional one. Thank you for your continued trust and partnership! Go Black Knights!”

We asked students two questions this morning before they reported to class.
How do you feel about the first day of school?
What are you looking forward to the most this year?
Students then went to class to meet their teachers, learn about classroom expectations, and participate in many first day of school icebreakers and activities. Teachers utilized their own skills to create memorable moments on the first day of school. It seemed like every classroom had something special going on. Mr. Clemmer had perhaps the funniest ice breaker in his classroom — students competed to see who could peel a banana the fastest while only using one hand.
There were so many engaging first-day-of-school activities, that it’s hard to just name a few. Students in the library played fruit basket turnover. Mrs. Guay had students make a playlist using their top ten favorite songs, which really showed her their personalities and music preferences. Ms. Hunt had students using uno to create personal finance scenarios. Mr. Murray had seniors visit his class as guess speakers. Mrs. Carlson, Mrs. Tarlton, Ms. May, and Mrs. Wampler’s classes were playing trivia. Mrs. Sampson’s class had a Getting to Know your Classmates through World Geography activity.

One of the coolest activities of the day was in Mrs. Medlin’s science classroom. Mrs. Medlin had students read evidence about The Complicated Case of the Camp Clearfield Killings. They then used the scientific discovery method to analyze their evidence and solve the crime. There were so many great lessons and activities on the first day, but this activity in particular was a huge hit with the students and gave them something to talk about!

The first day of school was full of many special moments meeting new teachers, making new friends, and catching up with old teachers and friends.
Students had lunch during third period, and then they returned to class for afternoon sessions. After school, students exited through the commons to either carline, student parking, or the bus ramp. About a hundred students stayed on or near campus for after school activities. We caught up with several students and one teacher during dismissal to see how the day went.
This school year is already off to a successful start! Mr. Broyles, our principal, had this to say about the first day of school:
