The Special Olympics Basketball event for the 2024-2025 school year was hosted here at Chuckey-Doak High School and went off without a hitch. Every year, the special olympics teams from across the Greene County area congregate and play a sport, in this case basketball, to compete for a winning title. Students from West Greene, South Greene, Greeneville, and Chuckey-Doak all competed with each other.

The first team to compete was our very own Black Knights against the West Greene Buffaloes. The competition was heated, and our student section was electric! Both the athletes and the students watched as the Buffaloes and Black Knights went toe-to-toe in a race against the clock. The score was close, but the Buffaloes came out on top.

We interviewed a handful of people and a student about why the Special Olympics event was so important to the community. They all explained, to an extent, how the Olympics created opportunities for students that are usually excluded from student culture to participate in something as exciting as this. We spoke with Coach Beets, who teaches the wellness class here at Chuckey-Doak, and she expressed that the students looked forward to participating in the events annually.

Special thanks to Dr. Rhonda Lankford for organizing this important event for our area schools.
