Each month, the CDHS Knight’s Nook Library has a different theme.  October’s theme was Crime Fiction Month, and the last week of the month was dedicated to our science classes in the library for a cross-curricular lesson.  The science classes have been participating in crime investigations activities with Ms. Pollock, our librarian, playing the game master.  Ms.P was in charge of these activities and explained to the students how the investigations work. During these activities students had to use many techniques and skills to figure out the crime and who did it. According to Ms. P, “Students had to use their literacy skills 1 through three along with the scientific method to examine texts and make hypotheses.”

In the interviews students have stated different skills they used during these activities. They also explained how they enjoyed these investigations and how good leadership can positively affect their experience. The students involved in the forensics-based competition were from Mrs. Medlin’s, Mrs. May’s, and Ms. Wilder’s science classes, ranging in grades 9 through 12.  According to Ms. P, several students showed a strong inclination towards forensics and using their literacy skills with their science skills.  She praised, “Aden Moore, Addy Bradley, Colton Teaster, and Elijah Barker” as possible future detectives.

During the challenge students had to use literacy skills and the scientific method to solve three objectives from a fictional cold case. Once they completed an objective, they would receive a new envelope from Ms. P, and they would continue to solve objectives.  There were three teams in each period that competed, and the teams that won got something from the coffee shop. One of the freshmen-sophomore teams, captained by Emily Swecker, finished 1st place out of all science classes in 78 minutes.  Emily’s team included:  Emily Swecker, Collin Lovins, Corbin Brown, Hayleigh Seidl, Emma Parker, Elijah Garland, and Gannon Cognell.

Thank you to Ms.P and all the participating students. Also, a big thank you to the science teachers for letting their students participate in the crime investigations. The students loved the collaboration between science and the library!
