On November 11th, Chuckey-Doak High School held its 24th annual Veterans Day Ceremony for veterans in Greene County. Our principal Mr. Broyles and one of our teachers Mr. Porterfield, wanted to show their utmost respect towards our veterans, so they prepared a special event that showed appreciation to our local veterans for their dedication and sacrifices for the United States. The student council, chorus, band, and JROTC all contributed to the ceremony.
To start it off, Senior Layla Fox held a prayer that was dedicated to veterans and to those who couldn’t make it. Mr. Porterfield then had his annual speech that was dedicated to Chuckey-Doak’s veteran faculty members. Next, the band and the chorus sang the National Anthem which was followed by Student Council bringing out each of the flags for the military branches as well as the flag for those who were POWs and MIA. To finish off the ceremony, state representative David Hawk gave a speech on the importance of keeping our tradition for Veterans Day alive, and how we as a nation must stay strong.
After the ceremony was finished, veterans were provided a free brunch in the library that had a variety of foods to choose from. Mrs. Teresa Shipley, our Parent Engagement Committee, our student coffee shop workers, and our class officers hosted the brunch. Chuckey-Doak students who brought a veteran were allowed to accompany the veterans to the brunch. After the veterans were finished with their brunch, we asked for their thoughts on what the significance of veterans day was.
From the bottom of our hearts, we the students, faculty, and members of Chuckey-Doak High School want to thank our Greene County and United States Veterans for their service. Without them, we would not hold the freedoms that we have today. We as a country must keep our compassion for veterans alive because if that is lost, then a part of our country’s history, tradition, and values are lost.
Please enjoy these photographs from our Creative Editor and Photographer Emmie Tipton. Special thanks to Mr. Lee Porterfield and Mrs. Teresa Shipley for their many hours of preparation for this special day.
