CDHS Wrestling Team Starts the Season Strong

Wrestling is one of the most intensive sports that Chuckey-Doak High School has to offer. From the rigorous conditioning to the adrenaline-pumped matches, our coaches make sure that our wrestlers are prepared for any situation that comes their way. Our program is led by Coaches Brett Knight, Derek Turberville, and David GeFellers. So far, the wrestling team has had three wrestling meets. They went against the Carter High School Hornets, Knoxville Catholic, the Cocke County Fighting Cocks, Davy Crockett High, and Daniel Boone High. The biggest win has been against the Carter High School Hornets, with an aggregate score of 48-18. Danny Turberville has had the most individual wins for boys, and Lucy Hall has had the most individual wins for girls. Chuckey-Doak has two more meets before they end off 2024.

We interviewed some of our wrestlers to get an insight on what it means to really be involved in the sport, as well as some performance questions and their thoughts on improving in their craft.

Next up, we interviewed Head Coach Brett Knight to see his thoughts on the wrestling team and how far he’s come.  When asked, “What were your expectations at the start of the wrestling season and how have those expectations lived up?,” Coach Knight said, “I thought that it would be a slow start since most of the wrestlers were first year but they have exceeded my expectations at tournaments and placing for medals.”  The Charger was curious as to the hardest part about being a wrestling coach for Coach Knight, who said, “Coaching is the easy part. It’s all the paperwork, logistics to get to a match, and making sure that everyone is on weight. That’s the hardest.”
