During the last week in January, The Knight’s Nook Library hosted groups from Mrs. Wagner’s classes coming to complete a literacy task about Black History Month. Black History Month, which is actually in February (this month), is a period dedicated to celebrating and recognizing the achievements and contributions of African Americans to the United States throughout history. Chuckey-Doak High School is a school with kids from different ethnic backgrounds, and it is important for us to learn about Black History Month, so no child or individual feels left out at school and because African Americans have impacted United States’ history in such an impactful way. This week’s library tasks are important, but they are also a hands-on experience so that students feel more involved while having fun. Ms. Pollock, our school librarian, designed this multimedia scavenger hunt to help students practice literacy standard 7 (analyzing works produced in different media formats) while learning about their history standards, focusing on Black History.
After this experience, we want our students to understand why this topic and month are so important. We as a school don’t want anyone to feel left out while they are at school. Discrimination and/or bullying because of how someone looks isn’t acceptable and we don’t want anyone feeling left out at CDHS. We want to learn about different cultures and celebrate the accomplishments of all of our students and faculty members.
