February was CTE Month! Career and Technical Education (CTE) plays a vital role in preparing students for the workforce by providing them with skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in various careers. Chuckey-Doak High school offers many CTE programs, including  Mr. Clemmer and Mr. Murray’s Agriculture Classes, Mrs. Guay’s Health Care and Human Services Classes, Ms. P and Coach Hensley’s BK Media classes, Ms. Hunt’s Business & Marketing classes, and Mr. Dalton’s Coding and Engineering classes. These programs often combine classroom instructions with real- world experiences to gain insights on their chosen careers.

Chuckey-Doak has four different programs of study in the Agriculture Cluster taught by Mr. Clemmer and Mr. Murray:  Agribusiness, Agriculture Engineering, Horticulture, and Veterinary & Animal Science.  Ag students also participate in our FFA student organization.  Our Chuckey-Doak FFA chapter is led by President Avery Armstrong, Vice Presidents Gracie Monk and Chelsea Hensley, Secretary Sapana Das, Treasurer Kenna Combs, Reporter Xiomara Vides, Sentinel Joshua Franklin, and Historian Madison Shelton.

Mrs. Guay’s Health Care classes prepare students who want to go into the healthcare industry after high school; the Human Service cluster focuses on providing students with skills needed to support themselves and other individuals.  These programs of study each have their own student organization – HOSA and FCCLA.  HOSA stands for Health Occupation Students of America; it is led by President Sapana Das and Vice President Guadalupe Flores. FCCLA stands for Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America; it is led by President Lindsey Lehan, Vice President Guadalupe Flores, and Social Media Manager Jermiah Byrd.

Ms. P and Coach Hensley’s BK Media clusters provide students with the ability to communicate and storytell through digital media content; students in these classes actually hold media jobs for BK Media.  These classes and the extra-curricular organization produce all of our media products for Chuckey-Doak High School, including the Black Knight News, Tomfoolery & Shenanigans Podcast, the Charger News Vlog, the Accolade Yearbook, the BK Media YouTube Channel, and most of what is published on our school social media platforms.  BK Media is led by Editor-in-Chief Harlee Richardson, Art Chief Emmie Tipton, Vlogging Chief Kylinn Davis, Chief Content Creator Kaleo Toscanodulanto, and Chief Producers & Pocasters James Champe and Patrick Barker, III.

For Ms. Hunt’s Marketing and Management pathway, students take Introduction to Business, Marketing I, and Marketing II.  Our Marketing II class runs BK Customs, our t-shirt factory for screenprinted clothing items.  Ms. Hunt’s classes learn fundamental business skills, in addition to marketing and management principles that can be applied to most fields in the adult world.  Students who do not have a specific career planned for after high school may be interested in this pathway since the skills can be transferred to any type of business setting.  Ms. Hunt is planning on reviving FBLA at Chuckey-Doak for our business students.

Mr. Dalton’s Digital Technology cluster provides teaching students the fundamentals of computer systems, programming, and software applications.  Coding is the main focus in class, but they also learn computer engineering.  In the Architecture and Engineering classes, students learn to design mechanical parts, shapes, and other items inside of SolidWorks.  Mr. Dalton’s students from either program of study may participate in the Robot Drone League.  Our Architecture and Engineering students also attend Engineering Day at the University of Tennessee and the Annual Greene County Cardboard Boat Race.

CTE is an essential component of a well-rounded education system, empowering students to achieve career goals and contribute to their communities.  These courses can count as a student’s elective focus, and they may register for these classes in the guidance office.  Most of these classes also offer industry certification and some of the classes may be used to satisfy other graduation requirements.

We would like to give a special shoutout once again to Chase Murray, Larkin Clemmer, Laura Guay, D’Lee Pollock, Jason Hensley, Faith Hunt, and Matthew Dalton for our on-campus CTE programs. These programs prepare all of our students for real-world situations and their chosen careers. In addition to the teachers named above, our school is planning on adding a new vo-tech center, which will house 8 additional CTE teachers and many programs of study.
