Before Spring Break, Dr. Hall’s Spanish class presented a debate on Fidel Castro and the Spanish Revolution. During the debate, two teams debated on whether Castro or Batista was the better dictator. The “Spanish Revolution” refers to the social revolution that erupted in Spain during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), following a failed coup attempt, and involved workers’ organizations seizing power and implementing socialist and anarchist principles.

In this debate students were asked questions by student judges about which dictator ruled better. Batista was a Cuban military officer and politician who played a dominant role in Cuban politics from his initial rise to power as part of the 1933 Revolt of the Sergeants. According to the Cuban Revolution, Castro led a movement against Batista’s forces in a Guerilla war. After Batista was overthrown in 1959, Castro assumed military and political power.
