The first quarter of the school year involved many fun and interactive activities for students to participate in. These projects encompass a range of activities designed to help students learn and develop their academic skills in a classroom. Some of these activities consisted of: Mrs. May’s Fire Lab, Mr. Filler’s Automotive Project, Ms. Farret’s Mexican Independence Day Celebration, Mrs. Jarrell’s Ice Cream Project, and Mrs. Darnell’s Beowulf Project.
Mrs. May’s Fire Lab starts with a mixture of water, dish soap, and butane gas. Students dip their hands into the mixture and pick up bubbles that are in the liquid. Then, Mrs. May takes a match to light the bubbles on your hand, causing a big flame to form. The flame does not burn your hand and looks amazing whenever a picture is taken.
Mr. Filler’s Automotive Project is a continuous project throughout the semester. They started off by taking apart two engines and putting them back together. During the exploration of the engine, students learned about the purpose of all the different parts that make up the engine. It was really cool to see inside and to watch students learn about the parts and their maintenance.
Ms. Farret’s Mexican Independence Day Celebration was a day of commemoration for the beginning of the independence movement from Spain. The Spanish classes danced, ate traditional Mexican foods, and learned about the history of Mexico. The students learned about Dia de La Independencia and the role of patriotism and liberty in Mexico’s quest for freedom. Students really enjoyed this interactive lesson that helped them learn about another culture’s holiday.
Mrs. Jarrell’s Ice Cream Project is an interactive learning experience on how to make ice cream. Students used ingredients mixed in a bag to make the ice cream. They could shake it up, then eat it when it becomes solid. You could add toppings and have your ice cream the way you wanted it. Students learned fundamental science concepts while making ice cream — what a fun way to learn!
Mrs. Darnell’s Beowulf Project is a project based on a story that students read in English 4 class. Students can either make a poster board or a viking ship to explain what the story is about. Through this project, students will gain a better understanding of Anglo-Saxon culture and values, but also practice important skills such as critical thinking, research, and communication.
