Every semester has that one lesson that sets the tone for everything that follows. Here at CDHS, there has not been just one, but five exceptional lessons to start off this semester. These lessons range from science and hair labs to boat races and pig dissections. In this article, we will interview students to hear how these experiences impacted their learning.

In Mrs. May’s Physics Class, students discovered that understanding motion does not always require advanced machines or technology. Instead, they learned that their own bodies are a powerful scientific tool. By using their knowledge of the human body, the class set out to determine the average speed of a moving object in a fun and engaging way.

Mr. Dalton’s Architectural and Engineering Class paddled their way to a win in the boat race held at the Greene County YMCA on Wednesday, January 14th. At the beginning of the race, the team was struggling; however, their perseverance kept them aboard and steady in the race. The team is no stranger to winning, as this is their second consecutive year of winning.

Instead of memorizing dates and names from a textbook, Mrs. Wagner’s Tennessee History Class recently became investigators. They had bags with items describing certain teachers and had to use their investigative skills to determine which teacher was being described. As Madison stated, “We learned the hardships Archeologists have to go through.”

Mrs. Swinney takes her cosmetology class very seriously and gives them the best experiences she has to offer for real-world situations. They have mannequins that they work on and treat as if they were clients. Her cosmetology 1 class had a sectioning lab this week. As Cheyenne Casey says, “sectioning takes a lot of patience”, and it is an essential skill to have for cosmetology. Sectioning is the starting point for the subsequent labs that involve hair.

Science teacher Ms. Wilder gave her biology class a dissection for the end-of-semester project. The dissection was on a pig, and many students found it fun or interesting. This hands-on experience helps the students get more experience with both biology and the anatomy of a pig. The skills that can come from this are observation, critical thinking, and even following detailed instructions. Overall, this dissection allowed students to deepen their understanding of living systems in a fun and engaging way.
