3 Beyond-The–School Athletes

Chuckey-Doak High School provides 10+ sports for students to participate in, but outside of official CDHS athletics, three standout students participate in unique athletics of their own, such as Disc Golf, Barrel Racing, and Skeet Shooting. Seniors Adler Hawkins and Kayla Wilcox, and Junior, Scott Dunn are three top-level competitors who succeed outside of school in various areas. This week we had the opportunity to speak to them and learn more about what they do.

Adler Hawkins has been playing Disc Golf for the past four years; he has been
competing in PDGA-sanctioned events since 2023. He recently earned the title of a professional player through the Professional Disc Golf Association in July of 2026. He competes in local and regional tournaments across East Tennessee. Just in 2026, he has competed in Mixed Pro Open divisions in multiple tournaments. Adler has shown his ability to perform at high levels by finishing top in multiple tournaments, including a win at Show & Throw at Cherokee Park. CDHS is so proud to see Adler succeed in what he does, as well as the other two athletes outside of our athletics programs.

Kayla Wilcox is an equestrian. She competes in various categories such as barrel racing, as well as showing horses. She has been doing this for four years. Kayla has competed all over the South, including places like Paris, Georgia; White Pine, Tennessee; Newmarket, Tennessee; and Asheville, North Carolina. This most recent summer, Kayla had the opportunity to attend the National Barrel Horse Association (NBHA) Youth & Teen World Championships in Perry, Georgia, and competed there. While Kayla’s athletics are not officially affiliated with Chuckey-Doak High School, she and her horses made an appearance at the Summer Knights Festival at the end of last school year. Kayla plans to continue to barrel race and show horses throughout her senior year and in the future.

Scott Dunn is the final athlete in this week’s feature, and he participates in skeet shooting. With his team, he competed in the Tennessee State Regional Competition. They then competed in the Tennessee State Nationals later this summer. Individually, Scott competed in Regionals, State, and Nationals. Also, He participated in the Krieghoff Masters and Junior Worlds. Over the summer, Scott said he shot 100 straight at Nationals and won national skeet doubles. Scott continues to compete in competitive skeet shooting.

All three of these outstanding students compete in non-school-related competitions. These students show that success in sports can happen both inside and outside of school. Adler, Kayla, and Scott have each worked hard to compete at high levels and represent themselves through their individual sports. These three athletes are great examples of how students can pursue their passions and succeed outside of school.
